Come & Crochet A Guinness World Record For A Cause

Come & Crochet A Guinness World Record For A Cause

Victoria Roberts is a 15-year-old from High Littleton, Bath, attempting to set a new world record along with the help of the crafty community. Read how you can help Victoria crochet her way to her goal, in memory of her close friend Emma Welch.

Victoria’s attempt is in memory of Victoria’s close friend, Emma Welch, who was an avid fundraiser. Victoria met Emma ‘Daisy’ Welch when they started at Norton Hill School in Midsomer Norton. Over the years they became the best of friends, who were always giggling and laughing together.

EMMA’S STORY

Emma herself suffered from scoliosis. When she found out that her minister Andrew Stammers had been diagnosed with a brain tumour, she decided to raise money and awareness of Brain Tumour Research, because funding was so low. At the age of 12, Emma attempted a Guinness World Record for climbing the height of Mount Everest on an indoor climbing wall.

Even though her scoliosis was getting worse, Emma rode 1000 miles the following year to raise more money. Emma was given a date for her own operation, which took place on 3rd June, 2015. She had been planning to hold the largest Teddy Bears’ Picnic on top of Mount Snowdon and decided to have it just the week before her operation, as she knew she would be out of action for a while afterwards.

Emma Welch

Tragically, Emma died the day after her operation following complications, leaving family and friends devastated. It was following Emma’s funeral that Victoria decided to try and carry on fundraising for Brain Tumour Research in Emma’s memory.

FIRST WORLD RECORD

To honour Emma’s memory and the fundraising she did for Brain Tumour Research, the first record is for the Largest Display of Crocheted Items, which is currently held at 13,388.

Emma’s middle name was Daisy, so Victoria learned to crochet the flowers and has since taught her friends and even people at a local arts and crafts event. She found the same bear that Emma was holding in the photo above, and made a daisy headband for her – and Daisy Bear was born!

Victoria invites you to crochet daisies and send yours to her! After the world record attempt on Saturday 4th June, the flowers will be sold off and donated to Brain Tumour Research.

SECOND WORLD RECORD

The second Guinness World Record is for the Most People Crocheting Simultaneously, which is currently set by 485 Nigerians. The Forum in Bath have donated the use of their facilities for Victoria’s attempt on Saturday 4th June, 2016 when she will try and attempt to break this record.

Victoria

Victoria has set up a ticketing system to comply with GWR specifications – tickets are FREE – click here to book yours now. 120 places are booked so far, so they could really do with some help! People taking part in the event need to bring some yarn and a crochet hook.

The crocheted daisies will all be on display and the record attempt will take place at 10.30am and last for 15 minutes. As long as the person attending is able to at least make a crochet chain stitch, you do not have to make anything.

Victoria would love for Daisy Bear to be able to break the Guinness World Record and hopes that by raising funds and awareness, people will one day not have to go through the tragedy that is a brain tumour.
