The world’s first interspecies knitting club has been launched at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where animal lovers can spend time with feline friends as they create knitted donations for the charity’s homeless moggies. Whether you’re a novice or expert, crafty cat lovers are welcome to the Knitting Kittens club.
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is a registered charity that are champions for, and supporters of, vulnerable cats and dogs. Every year, the home cares for more than 8,000 dogs, and aims to never turn away a cat or dog that is in need of help but instead, find them a loving owner regardless of how long it takes for one to be found.
The famous rescue centre is inviting animal and craft lovers to its monthly events in the charity’s London cattery to make blankets, toys and knitted mice – or even to simply knit their own project. The creative donations will be used to keep more than 250 cats looking for new homes both warm and entertained. The next date is Wednesday 16th December – see other upcoming dates below.
The monthly Knittin’ Kittens club is a free event, and knitters are asked to bring their own needles and wool, but will be provided with patterns and lessons for beginners. If you are able, a suggested donation of £2 is greatly appreciated and goes towards caring for their animals.
“We’ve loved seeing people enjoy our Knittin’ Kittens club, and our feline residents have already benefited from visitors’ skills and generosity. Our cats greatly appreciate their donated blankets and knitted mice to play with in their pens while they wait for a new home. We hope the success of the club continues, and that more people come to visit our cats needing homes, too.”
Sui Li Weight, Team Leader at Battersea’s Cattery
“We hope knitters of all abilities, including complete beginners who will be shown the ropes, will join the fun and relaxed group, which is perfect for people who enjoy the company of cats. We have a lot of supporters who like to knit and thought this would be a great way to bring everyone together under one roof to share a mutual love of knitting and kitties.”
If you can’t join the Knitting Kittens at the moment, donations of knitted blankets and knitted mice are very welcome, for the cats to enjoy while they wait for new homes. The home can use crochet blankets, but prefer knitted versions as these are less likely to get tangled in little cat claws.
