It seems like everyday we are bombarded with ever more harrowing images of war torn countries, people fleeing their homes or children being pulled from the rubble. With the holiday season creeping closer we turn our thoughts to those worse off than ourselves and open our crafty hearts to them.
Knit for Peace is an organisation that curates the distribution of donated, handmade knitted goods for those in need, both within the UK and worldwide. They started off as an initiative to bring together women from conflicting backgrounds to knit clothes and toys for street children and orphans in Rwanda and Delhi.
After a while knitters in the UK began catch on to the movement and to form charity groups who knit and donate to the cause and have since given hundreds of thousands of items to those in need. Never selling the donations, Knit for Peace simply pass them on to where they are most needed, be that refugee camps, community groups or hospices from their main base in London.
In addition to their work abroad, this winter KfP will be driving their ‘Keep Britain Warm’ campaign, where knitters and crocheters donate granny squares that can then be made into dressing gowns and smoking style jackets. These are then given to aid elderly people in the UK who succumb fuel poverty, enabling them to stay warmer during the long English winters.
KfP also organise holidays for numerous knitters to go to the countries they help. This enables individuals to get a first hand glimpse at how their donations are making lives better in places like India. During the two week trip knitting sessions are arranged with a variety of activities including teaching street children how to finger knit.
